Enhanced solar stills with low-complexity active condensation in la Guajira
This study presents an improvement in solar stills through a low-complexity active condensation system designed for water-scarce areas, such as rural communities in La Guajira. The proposed system increases water collection efficiency up to 92% of the evaporation rate, surpassing the typical yields of conventional stills without requiring costly or complex infrastructure. The still was tested under regional irradiance conditions, comparing a phase without active condensation and another with the system implemented. Results indicate an increase in the amount of water condensed in the active phase, especially during high irradiance periods, without exceeding the mass balance of the system. The findings emphasize that this technology is viable for low-resource contexts, enabling solar distillation to adapt to the arid conditions of La Guajira. This simple and effective design not only improves access to drinking water but also provides an accessible and sustainable solution for communities impacted by drought and resource scarcity. This research contributes to the knowledge base on affordable desalination technologies tailored to the needs of vulnerable regions.
