Description of billing guidelines for blood-derived products for medical account charges
Transfusion therapy, one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine, has helped reduce mortality and extend and improve the quality of life for many people with various disorders. The administration of blood components is part of healthcare. The decision to transfuse a patient can sometimes be a difficult judgment, and physicians must base it on a careful evaluation of several factors and clinical signs. However, inappropriate use of blood and its components still exists today.
This document describes the billing guidelines for charging transfusions in hospitalized patients and/or those receiving outpatient care. It should be noted that, although the main characteristics of blood and its components, as well as general guidelines for their use, are described, this is not intended to serve as a guide for decision-making when indicating a transfusion, as this remains the exclusive responsibility of the attending physician.
