Nicotine addiction: the importance of consistent links among basic science and public health politics. A brief analysis between Colombia and México
Nicotine addiction, in addition to being a public health problem, affects sustainable development in countries such as Mexico and Colombia. For this reason, the governments of these territories have developed programs for its prevention and treatment under the guidelines of the World Health Organization. However, the statistics and the costs generated by the diseases it causes and the loss of human capital, as a result of its morbidity and mortality, continue to rise. In this way, the importance of articulating the knowledge derived from neuroscience is evident, specifically the changes in the nervous system that occur due to the transition from occasional tobacco use to addiction for the design and evaluation of public policies. The foregoing, in order to strengthen specialized interdisciplinary interventions, which allow the recognition of the individual as a subject of law and, in this way, achieve comprehensive care from promotion to rehabilitation.
