Assertive communication by healthcare staff as a strategy to enhance patient safety in the healthcare sector
Objective. To analyze the effects of assertive communication by medical staff as a strategy for strengthening patient safety in the healthcare sector. Methodology. A qualitative study was conducted through a literature review of specialized publications on the subject published between 2015 and 2025, using databases such as Scopus, Scielo, PubMed, and others. Results. Preliminary results indicate that communication failures can lead not only to poor patient care but also to the generation of non-conformities and complaints regarding service delivery. This not only allows doubts to arise and take root regarding the service provided by the physician but also constitutes a serious breach of healthcare standards. Therefore, prioritizing assertive communication is essential for the consolidation of a patient-centered system and the comprehensive management of clinical risks that may arise. Conclusion. Assertive communication must be one of the primary skills acquired by healthcare providers within the integrated healthcare system, as it is an essential skill in the reception, care, and monitoring of patients, which allows for the optimization of service quality and ensures a high standard of care across all institutions providing it.
