LOVE WITHOUT RISK: THE POWER OF PREVENTION IN SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS
Objective. To analyze current issues and preventive strategies regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young Colombians, highlighting the role of comprehensive sex education as a tool for self-care, informed decision-making, and risk reduction. Methodology. A review of scientific literature and official documents issued by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) was conducted in order to support a comprehensive approach to STI prevention in young populations. The article is developed within the academic context of the National Open and Distance University (UNAD) and its School of Health Sciences (ECISA). Results. The review shows that STI prevention remains a public health priority and that gaps persist in information, access to services, and self-care practices among young people. It also identifies that comprehensive sex education programs, when they incorporate effective communication and a rights-based perspective, help reduce risky behaviors and strengthen responsibility in sexual relationships. Conclusion. The need is proposed for a comprehensive approach that links health promotion, transformative sex education, assertive communication, and social co-responsibility in the construction of a healthy, safe, and stigma-free sexuality. The article emphasizes that strengthening these components in educational and community settings can enhance the impact of STI prevention strategies among young Colombians.
