Data-Driven Market Intelligence: Development of anInteractiveDashboard for the Analysis of Foreign Trade in Colombia
This working paper analyzes the role of market intelligence as a strategic tool for understanding foreign trade, through the development of an interactive dashboard based on data regarding Colombia’s international economic situation. The research is based on a mixed-methods approach focused on the processing, modeling, and visualization of more than 32.6 million customs records from the National Tax and Customs Directorate (DIAN), covering the period 2009–2025.
The management and development of the dashboard were structured into six phases, during which a robust, standardized database was also built under the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS), enabling international comparability and detailed analysis by subheadings, sectors, and territories. The implementation of tools such as Python and Power BI facilitated the transformation of complex data into a dynamic and intuitive interface capable of integrating logistical, financial, and geographic variables.
As a result, the developed dashboard allows for the exploration of behavioral patterns in exports and imports, the identification of medium- and long-term trends, and the analysis of the composition of Colombia’s export basket. Furthermore, the tool strengthens evidence-based decision-making by reducing the dispersion and complexity of trade information.
It is concluded that the integration of data analytics and market intelligence not only enhances the understanding of international trade but also strengthens the research and strategic capabilities of academic and business stakeholders, thereby contributing to the strengthening of regional competitiveness and the internationalization processes of companies, initially in the Boyacá Central Region.
