The study of student retention and persistence in distance higher education
reveals challenges that extend beyond academic factors alone. This article
presents a comprehensive analysis of the “Cátedra Unadista” at the National
Open and Distance University (UNAD) as a key strategy for reducing student
dropout rates, by addressing social, cognitive, and emotional factors that
influence retention. Through a methodology that combines critical analysis of
contemporary theories and a thorough empirical review, this study highlights
the importance of holistic pedagogical support and the cultivation of an
institutional culture that promotes active student engagement.
