Academic Counseling at Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD) is an institutional strategy designed to strengthen student retention, metasystemic coordination, and the consolidation of students’ life projects within open, distance, and virtual education contexts. This initiative traces the evolution of the National Counseling System (SNC) since its inception in 2004, highlighting its transformation into a central hub for academic, pedagogical, psychosocial, and administrative processes that provide comprehensive support throughout the university journey.

The proposal integrates strategies for welcoming, orientation, student profiling, comprehensive support, and pedagogical guidance, articulated through six strategic pillars that strengthen inclusion, retention, and autonomous, collaborative, and meaningful learning. Furthermore, the SNC is consolidating its role as a cross-cutting component of the Integrated Institutional Management System, facilitating interaction among schools, zones, academic networks, and mission-oriented units to respond to students’ needs in a context-specific manner.

The results demonstrate positive impacts on student retention indicators, participation in orientation and assessment processes, and the consolidation of support strategies aimed at reducing early dropout rates. Similarly, the importance of counseling as a mediator in the student’s integration into the UNAD pedagogical model is recognized, strengthening processes of social inclusion, adaptation to virtual learning environments, and the construction of sustainable academic and personal trajectories.

The experience demonstrates the relevance of comprehensive support models and academic guidance strategies for promoting retention, educational success, and human development in higher education mediated by digital technologies.
